Join Chris Edwards, staff psychologist in Western's Counseling Center, for shared space in cultivating self-compassion and mindfulness.

This gathering each week provides time to slow down, check-in with ourselves, connect with others, and explore mindful self-compassion. Focus will be on the core components of self-compassion including mindfulness, self-kindness, and common humanity. We hope to offer simple practices, opportunities to share, and to be in community with one another.

This is a drop-in series for Western students, staff, and faculty; attend as often or as infrequently as you'd like. This weekly program is open to all people in the Western community and will center the wellness of LGBTQ+ students.

Workshop #1: Mindfulness

Join Chris for the first session of the MSC workshop series where we'll discuss pillars of self-compassion and focus our time on an introduction to mindfulness . Share what you do to stay grounded, practice mindfulness, and learn how this relates to self-compassion. Chris will share a bit, invite folks to engage in mini mindfulness exercises, and close with a guided practice.
 

Workshop #2: Mindfulness vs. Over-Identification

Join Chris for the second session of the MSC workshop series where we'll continue our exploration of mindfulness with attention to our tendencies towards over-identification . Share observations of mindfulness vs. over-identification in your life and continue to expand your mindfulness practice. Chris will share a bit, invite folks to engage in mini mindfulness exercises, and close with a guided practice.

Workshop #3: Self-Kindness

Join Chris for week three where we will focus on self-kindness and how to cultivate an inner compassionate voice. We will open with a brief check-in, take time to share with one another, and close with a self-compassion exercise and guided meditation.

Workshop #4: Self-Kindness vs. Self-Judgment

Join Chris for the fourth session of the Mindful Self-Compassion series where we will focus on the topic of self-kindness vs. self-judgment . We will provide opportunities to share in community, examine ways to be kinder to the self, and engage in several guided exercises.
 

Workshop #5: Common Humanity

Join Chris for week five of the Mindful Self-Compassion series where the focus will be on the experience of common humanity . We will explore what it feels like to be imperfectly human, to share in the universality of pain and suffering, and find connection through common threads . There will be space to share in community and an invitation to participate in guided self-compassion practices.

Workshop #6: Common Humanity vs. Isolation

Join Chris for the final session of the Mindful Self-Compassion series by leaning into the notion of common humanity vs. isolation . Explore ways to feel more connected in what it means to be human and decrease isolation. There will space to share, practice together, and reflect on how to make self-compassion a sustainable practice.
